City agencies make 281 arrests

It was another busy week for the City’s enforcement agencies during which they arrested 281 suspects and issued 59 682 fines.

In some recent successes:

• On Sunday, 19 October, Metro Police officers pulled over an overloaded VW Polo on the elevated freeway outbound. They recovered a card machine and a 9mm pistol and took six suspects into custody – four males and two females – aged between 29 and 35. The driver was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

• On Saturday, 18 October, Metro Police officers arrested a 37-year-old suspect for the possession of cocaine with an estimated street value of R40 000 in Arthur Road, Sea Point.

• On Friday, 17 October, just before 23:00, Law Enforcement officers arrested a 24-year-old suspect for the possession of a prohibited firearm in Tafelsig.

The suspect was one of 133 arrests made by Law Enforcement officers during the past week. They also issued 6 293 fines.

Metro Police officers arrested 109 suspects and issued 2 849 notices. Of those arrested, 23 were motorists found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

Traffic officers made 39 arrests - 31 for driving under the influence of alcohol, two for reckless and negligent driving and six for other transgressions. Officers also issued 50 540 fines, executed 1 769 warrants of arrest and impounded 225 public transport vehicles.

‘Many of our operational successes are the result of dedicated proactive patrols, and sharp observational skills of our staff on the ground. The arrest of six suspects near the CBD on the weekend is a good example - it started with officers being observant and spotting that the vehicle was overloaded. One can only hope that their hard work is complemented by the investigation into this and the hundreds of other arrests made, so that meaningful convictions can be achieved.
